Hysterectomy
Consultant-led surgical removal of the womb, performed using the least invasive technique appropriate for you.

What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is an operation to remove the womb (uterus). It is used to treat conditions that affect the female reproductive system, including heavy menstrual bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, prolapse of the womb and certain gynaecological cancers.
There are several types of hysterectomy. The operation may remove the womb alone (subtotal), the womb and cervix (total), or, when clinically indicated, also the fallopian tubes and ovaries. Approaches include laparoscopic (keyhole), vaginal and abdominal (open) surgery; the right choice depends on your diagnosis, anatomy and preferences.
After a hysterectomy you will no longer have periods or be able to become pregnant. The decision is significant and is always discussed in detail at your consultation so you can make a fully informed choice.
A hysterectomy is considered when other treatments have not worked, or when the underlying condition makes surgical management the most effective long-term option.
How the operation can be performed
Mr Connell tailors the approach to each patient, prioritising minimally invasive techniques whenever clinically appropriate.
Laparoscopic (Keyhole)
Performed through small incisions using a camera; typically shorter hospital stay and faster recovery than open surgery.
Vaginal Hysterectomy
Removal of the womb through the vagina, without an abdominal incision; often used alongside prolapse repair.
Subtotal Hysterectomy
Removes the body of the womb while preserving the cervix when clinically suitable; cervical screening continues afterwards.
Abdominal (Open)
Used when the womb is very enlarged or where previous surgery makes keyhole access unsafe; uses a single larger incision.
