"I first met Mr Connell Dec 2024 after being diagnosed with a prolapse. I found him very informative, guided me to the best approach to surgery requirements with no pressure to rush into it without thought. I made the decision 12 months later to go ahead with surgery in January 2026. Surgery was carried out March 2026 and Mr Connell was very supportive, understood my concerns. I found him approachable and very straight with the facts."
Vaginal Prolapse Treatment
Consultant-led urogynaecology and reconstructive surgery from Mr Rowan Connell, FRCOG.

What is Vaginal Prolapse?
Vaginal prolapse (pelvic organ prolapse) occurs when the network of muscles and ligaments that normally support the pelvic organs, the bladder, womb (uterus), or bowel, becomes weakened or overstretched. When these supports fail, one or more of these organs can slip from their natural position and bulge into the vagina.
While not life-threatening, a prolapse can cause significant physical discomfort, a "dragging" sensation, and emotional distress, often impacting exercise, intimacy, and daily activities.
According to NHS guidelines and the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG), prolapse is extremely common, affecting approximately 1 in 10 women over the age of 50.
Recognising the type
Symptoms often depend on which organ has descended. Specialist assessment confirms the type and guides treatment.
Anterior Prolapse (Cystocele)
The bladder bulges into the front wall of the vagina.
Posterior Prolapse (Rectocele)
The rectum bulges into the back wall of the vagina.
Uterine Prolapse
The womb descends into the vaginal canal.
Vault Prolapse
The top of the vagina sags, typically following a previous hysterectomy.
