Mr Rowan Connell, Consultant Gynaecologist
Understanding Menopause

What happens during menopause?

Menopause is when your periods stop due to lower hormone levels. It usually affects women between the ages of 45 and 55, but can happen earlier. The years leading up to menopause, when symptoms begin while you are still having periods, are known as the perimenopause.

Symptoms vary widely between individuals and may include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, mood changes, anxiety, low energy, joint aches, brain fog, vaginal dryness and changes in libido. They can persist for several years and have a significant impact on day-to-day life and work.

The NHS and NICE recommend that menopause symptoms are reviewed individually, with treatment options including lifestyle measures, cognitive behavioural therapy, vaginal oestrogen and systemic Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) where appropriate.

HRT can be highly effective for many women. The right preparation, dose and route depends on your symptoms, medical history and personal preferences, and is reviewed regularly.
