Procedure Overview

Hysteroscopy

A small camera passed through the cervix to examine the inside of the womb and, where needed, treat problems in the same procedure.

Understanding the Procedure

What is a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the womb (uterus). A thin telescope with a camera (a hysteroscope) is passed through the vagina and cervix into the womb, without any incisions in the abdomen.

It is most commonly used to investigate heavy or irregular periods, bleeding between periods, bleeding after the menopause, recurrent miscarriage and fertility problems. It can also help diagnose and remove polyps, small fibroids and retained tissue, and to assess the position of intrauterine contraceptive devices.

Diagnostic hysteroscopy is often performed as an outpatient procedure. More complex operative hysteroscopy is usually carried out under general or regional anaesthetic as a day case.

Hysteroscopy frequently allows diagnosis and treatment within the same appointment, avoiding the need for separate procedures.
